Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has acknowledged the strength of Barcelona by claiming that they are the best team in the world.

The two sides confront each other in the Champions League on Wednesday evening at the Emirates. Both teams faced each other in the quarter-finals of the same competition last season, with the Spanish champions winning the two-legged tie 6-3 on aggregate.

Barcelona are once again the hot favourites but Wenger has asked his team to raise their game and put up a fight.

"We are highly motivated to show we are a different team today," he said during a press conference. "Barcelona are the best team in the world. If you knock them out you have a good chance to win the competition.

“Last year they were the better team but I believe in my players, they have the quality 100% to do it. In the first half of the home game we were spectators and a little bit inhibited. Now I believe we are a completely different team.

"Losing to Barcelona made us better because we came out of the second game with a lot of frustrations after missing the turning point when we were 1-0 up.

"But more than looking at the past we want to show how good we are. We want to win this competition, we know we face the super-favourites but the only way to do it is to knock them out.

"The players don't deny the quality of Barcelona. What is important is to say 'look who we are now, we are capable of knocking you out now'. That is our target."

"We are now a stronger team because we have attitude and I have not seen many teams with such consistent focus every day," continued the Frenchman.

"We have made our own way by challenging for the title when nobody predicted we would. I believe we are a stronger team because we have attitude and focus.

"We are in ideal condition to face Barcelona. We have the belief and confidence and the players available are close to 100%. That was not the case last year.

"We want to show how good we are. We want to show the belief we have in our game and in our quality.

"Everyone expects an exciting game because it is two teams that play quality football. We want to be faithful to our philosophy and pass the ball well so we can dominate the game."

Fans have been awaiting Wednesday night’s Champions League game between Barcelona and Arsenal for weeks.

“I think they are the two teams that play the best football right now in the world,” said New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry, who played for both.

Barcelona, the 2006 and 2009 champion, has outscored opponents 112-23 over 38 games in all competitions this season. Arsenal also embraces an attacking style of play.

“Tomorrow we want to be faithful to our philosophy. To make sure we dominate the game, that we pass the ball and that we have possession of the ball,” Gunners manager Arsene Wenger said Tuesday. “If we do that, we have a very good chance of beating them.”

The second-round matchup in the total-goals series, which concludes at Camp Nou on March 8, follows a quarterfinal meeting last year. The teams tied 2-2 at Emirates Stadium in the first leg, with Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas breaking a leg, and the Blaugrana won the second leg 4-1 for a 6-3 aggregate victory as Lionel Messi dazzled with four goals, prompting Wenger to say “Messi’s like a PlayStation.”

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola warned his players not to be overconfident.

“With Arsenal if you are not well prepared you will be chasing shadows,” Guardiola said. “I like to watch Arsenal play football, but I don’t like to play against them.”

Barcelona had a team-record 28-game unbeaten streak earlier this season and won a Spanish league record 16 matches in a row before Saturday’s 1-1 tie at Sporting Gijon.

“We will try and score a goal, because scoring away from home is very important,” Guardiola said. “We want to bring at least a goal back to Barcelona.”

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will miss the game because of a knee injury, and a lack of height has made the Blaugrana relatively vulnerable to crosses into the penalty area.

But Messi, the two-time FIFA player of the year, has scored 40 goals in 34 games in all competitions this season, including 24 in the Spanish league.

“We need to be focused on the way we defend and not be focused on one man,” Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby said. “We know that individually he is really good, but if we do the job together I think it will be difficult for him. For me, that is the best way to control him and control the game.”

Pedro Rodriguez has 19 goals for Barcelona’s high-octane offense and David Villa has 18.

“The most important thing is to be well organized defensively and, when we have got the ball, play our game.” Diaby said.

Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie, finally over the left ankle injury that sidelined him from August until November, has 10 goals in his last seven games. Van Persie was sidelined for the games against Barcelona last year because of torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Arsenal’s midfield has also been tougher defensively this season, and 19-year-old Jack Wilshere emerged as a gritty complement to captain Cesc Fabregas.

“They’re a great team and very difficult opposition with very good players, especially up front,” Rodriguez said, adding that the form of Fabregas and Van Persie will make it “a very difficult tie, different from last year as maybe they are more dangerous.”

The Gunners beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 last Saturday, recovering from the previous weekend’s embarrassment, when Arsenal took a four-goal lead at Newcastle only to draw 4-4.

Arsenal also hopes to be lifted by the return of Samir Nasri, who has been sidelined for two weeks with a hamstring injury.

“We don’t deny the quality of Barcelona, but what is important for us is we have a good opportunity to show who we are now,” Wenger said. “Not only that, we also want to show Barcelona we are capable of knocking them out.”

“There were matches we lost and drew so it is a good moment to break this jinx,” Guardiola told reporters at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday ahead of the last-16 first-leg match.

“But as you must know, we are playing in Europe and in Europe teams are very good. The only reality that matters is that in the last two years we played a final and semi-final and this is not a bad percentage,” he added.

Barcelona were sluggish in a 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart last season and their trip to Olympique Lyon in 2009 ended in the same result.

Guardiola said he would not be taking Arsenal lightly despite his team’s 6-3 aggregate win over the Londoners in last season’s quarter-finals.

“I have a lot of respect for Arsenal, so I have an idea of Arsenal seeing both games we played last season—but just an idea because many players have changed and the influence in the game of (Robin) Van Persie is a lot,” he said.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has admitted he does not expect a comfortable atmosphere as his side travel to London to face Arsenal in the Champions League.

The tactician also believes the tie will not be decided in England, but did admit that should the Blaugrana lose, he will go all-out attack during the second leg.

"I do not expect a game tomorrow that is going to be comfortable, or that the tie will be resolved here," Guardiola stated during a pre-match press conference. "If we are defeated by a big margin, we will go out on the attack to win.

"I like Arsenal, but do not like playing against them. The reason behind this is what they do with the ball. They do not run when they possess it.

"I also imagine they will tighten up compared to last year and try to do better."

The tactician hopes his counterpart Arsene Wenger plays Frenchman Samir Nasri, as Guardiola is impressed by the 23-year-old.

"I hope Nasri can play," he added. "I always prefer it because he can influence the team and a match.

"We have a very tough tie - possibly the hardest and most complicated we have ever had. We must be very prepared, very strong and do well in the competition. I think that we play better in the quarter and semi-finals rather than the Round of 16.

Barcelona revive their entertaining rivalry with Arsenal on Wednesday in the first leg their Champions League last 16 tie that will showcase two of the most technically gifted and attractive sides in world soccer.

Barca, the 2009 winners, thumped Arsenal 6-3 in last year’s quarter-finals, drawing 2-2 in London before Lionel Messi scored all four goals in a 4-1 comeback win at the Nou Camp.

The teams also met in the 2006 final, when 10-man Arsenal took a first-half lead at the Stade de France in Paris before Barca fought back to win 2-1.

The Catalan club’s vice president Javier Faus told Reuters the presence of seven Spanish World Cup winners and World Player of the Year Messi in the Barca squad was grounds for optimism.

“Having said that, Arsenal are an extremely strong team and in my opinion the one that plays the best football in the English league,” Faus said in an interview.

“They are well placed in the Premier League and it’s going to be a very tough tie.”

Wednesday’s other last-16, first leg pits Serie A side AS Roma against Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk, who are appearing in the last 16 for the first time after failing in five previous qualifying attempts.

Valencia squandered a two-goal halftime lead and let Osasuna rally to a 3-3 draw in Spain on Monday.

Roberto Soldado, Aritz Aduriz and Marius Stankevicius all scored to give Valencia a 3-1 advantage heading into the second half.

But Carlos Aranda equalized in the 87th minute after fellow second-half substitute Miguel Flano scored Osasuna’s second 15 minutes after the break.

Osasuna had lost its previous six visits to the Mestalla stadium and the draw left it three points clear of the relegation zone.

Valencia remains fifth with 25 points, but missed out on further closing the gap to the Champions League places after losses by fourth-place Espanyol and third-place Villarreal.

Osasuna pressured up the pitch from the opening whistle and had a pair of chances by Krisztian Vadocz and Juanfran to take an early lead.

But Valencia soon took control and Soldado scored the opener in the 24th after his side won the ball in its own half. Winger Juanma Mata then cut in from the left and set up Soldado with a low ball in that the Spanish striker volleyed home.

Martin Palermo scored his 300th goal in the first division of Argentine football Monday, but it was only enough to give Boca Juniors a 1-1 draw with Gimnasia and wrap up another sub-par season for one of the country’s most popular clubs.

The largely meaningless match was played a day after Estudiantes won the Apertura title, defeating Arsenal 2-0. Estudiantes finished with 45 points from 19 matches. Second-place Velez, which defeated Racing 2-0 on Sunday, ended with 43 points. Boca had 25 points.

After scoring the goal, Palermo pulled off his Boca shirt, showing off a T-shirt that had “300” written on it.

The next matter of business for Boca is finding a coach.

Club directors are expected to meet on Tuesday with Banfield coach Julio Falcioni the top candidate. Roberto Pompei handled the team in Monday’s match. He has filled in on an interim basis since Claudio Borghi quit last month. Borghi was Boca’s fourth coach in four months when he was hired in May.

In two other matches Monday, River Plate defeated Lanus 4-1 and finished clear of the relegation zone. Huracan defeated Independiente 1-0.

Mariano Pavone scored twice for River with Erik Lamela and Adalberto Roman scoring the other goals. River finished with 31 points.

River Plate is also looking for a coach to replace Angel Cappa, who also resigned last month. Estudiantes’ coach Alejandro Sabella is reported to be the top candidate, though the club’s management has said it expects him to complete his contract, which ends in June.

Argentina's soccer legend Diego Maradona may be the next coach of the Iranian National Football team, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Monday.

In a recent ceremony to honor Iran's medal winners at the Asian games, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad confirmed plans to host a visit by Maradona and nodded when asked if the football great was coming to coach the national team, Mehr news reported.

Rumors of Maradona coaching Iran's national football first swirled last month when Iranian football officials announced a planned visit by the former coach of the Argentine national football team.

Ahmadinejad didn't make it clear when Maradona planned to visit Iran.

"Maradona will come to Iran but his visit is delayed," Mehr news quoted the president as saying.

Five days after crushing Real Madrid 5-0, Barcelona ended the week furious at having to make a five-hour overland dash to Pamplona, helpless victims of the air traffic controllers strike which paralyzed Spain.

Barcelona were unable to fly to the fixture against Osasuna due to the industrial strife, but the Spanish football federation (RFEF) then reversed their decision to postpone the game until Sunday.

That meant the Catalan club undertook a hectic five-hour train and coach journey to Pamplona via Zaragoza and the 20:00 (1900 GMT) kick-off was delayed by 50 minutes.

Despite the nightmare preparation, Barcelona won 3-0 to stay two points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the Spanish first division, but coach Pep Guardiola could not contain his anger.

"We were in contact all the time with the RFEF and we have been victims of the situation," seethed Guardiola.

"We were told that the game would be suspended if we were unable to travel (by plane). We waited and then finally after all the pressure they got, they told us we would lose the three points if we didn?t play.

"We don't mind travelling. Last season we did 14 hours on a coach to play a Champions League match because UEFA said they wouldn't postpone the match. However, the Spanish federation told us that if our flight didn't go they would postpone the (Osasuna) match.

"To play against Osasuna, a team that were unbeaten in 12 games, we wanted to compete as best as we could and coming in on one day was not the best way to do that."

Osasuna fans had to wait close to an hour for Barcelona to take to the field and then watched their team outclassed by the champions who fielded the same starting XI that dispatched Real 5-0 on Monday.

"I feel bad for our supporters and the Osasuna fans," said Guardiola. "It was not our intention, we always try and separate ourselves from this type of controversy.

"More than 300,000 people have been affected by the wildcat strike of the air controllers. Us as well. It was an exceptional situation and for this reason the RFEF told us the game would be suspended if we couldn't go by plane."

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Busquets admitted the players found it difficult to get going after the rushed pre-match preparation, but then found their momentum with goals from Pedro Rodriguez and Lionel Messi (2) clinching victory.

"At the start we found it a little tough because they came out strong and we were affected by how the day had gone," Busquets said.

Barcelona have now won their last eight matches in the league and their next game is Tuesday's Champions League match at home to Russians Rubin Kazan although the stakes are low with Barcelona having already sealed top spot in the group.

Hernan Crespo scored twice for Parma in a 2-1 win over Udinese on Sunday, taking his Serie A career total to 150 goals.

The former Argentina star converted a penalty in the 24th minute and then restored Parma’s lead with a sharply angled header in the 55th before exiting with an apparent injury.

Antonio Di Natale had equalized for Udinese in the 35th, his ninth score of the season—tying him for the league lead with Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o and Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.

“I remember them all, one by one,” Crespo said of his goals. “The secret is having a lot of passion and desire to play. And it’s been nice for me to come back to my home in Parma.”

The victory—Parma’s third in its last five games—moved the central Italian club six points clear of the relegation zone.

While Sunderland is in its highest position in a decade, West Ham has not won away from home since the opening day of last season. The Hammers are tied on 12 points and a minus-13 goal difference with Wolverhampton Wanderers, but trails because it has scored fewer goals.

Chelsea’s run without a league win stretched to four matches Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Everton. Chelsea has 30 points, one fewer than Manchester United—which still has its game against Blackpool to play. Manchester City has 29 points, three more than Tottenham.

PARIS (AP)—U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra scored his first goal for Saint-Etienne, helping his team to a 2-2 tie against visiting Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has played down his clash with Carlos Tevez after he substituted the striker in the closing stages of the 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers.

City’s club captain, Tevez, reacted angrily to being substituted and made no secret of his anger to manager Mancini as he left the pitch.

The Italian has no problem with Tevez’s reaction and instead was pleased to see his captain playing with such emotion and encourages him to air his opinion.

"It is not a big thing," the Italian told Sky Sports News.

"I am happy when one player doesn't want to leave the pitch. He is very important for the team but I took the decision and I think it was the right decision."

Tevez’s outburst is untimely for Mancini as a training ground bust-up between Mario Balotelli and Jerome Boateng led to the German defender being left out of the matchday squad on Saturday.

The Italian however has denied that the training ground scuffle or Tevez’s defiance has had an adverse effect on team morale.

"It was not a tough decision to include Balotelli," he added.

"Nothing happened on Friday. It was a normal situation that happens with every team every day.

"And Mario played well against Bolton. All he was missing were the goals."

Victory over Bolton on Saturday has cemented City’s place in the top four and they are now being tipped as title contenders, however Mancini is quick to keep his players’ feet firmly on the ground.

"We can see the table but for the moment we must continue to work and continue to win if it is possible,” he said.

Fluminense wins 1st Brazil title in 26 years

Fluminense won its first Brazilian league title in 26 years on Sunday, beating Guarani 1-0 from a second-half goal by striker Emerson.

The victory in front of nearly 40,000 fans at Engenhao stadium in Rio de Janeiro gave Fluminense 71 points, two more than Cruzeiro and three more than Corinthians after 38 rounds.

Corinthians and Cruzeiro also had chances to win the title, but neither could overcome Fluminense’s one-point advantage entering the final round. Ronaldo’s Corinthians drew 1-1 with Goias in Goiania, while Cruzeiro beat Palmeiras 2-1 in Minas Gerais.

It is Fluminense’s second Brazilian league title, after coach Carlos Alberto Parreira led the club to the championship in 1984.

The team led by Argentine playmaker Dario Conca, striker Fred and former Portugal and Chelsea playmaker Deco dominated this year’s tournament.

Former Lyon striker Fred had a couple of opportunities with headers that just missed in the first half, but it wasn’t until the 63rd that Emerson broke through Guarani’s tight defense.

Left back Carlinhos crossed into the area and the ball was deflected toward Emerson, whose first-time shot from the six-meter line hit the back of the net after going between the goalkeeper’s legs.

When he coached Palmeiras last year, the team was in the title hunt until the final round.

Ramalho nearly left Fluminense in July to take over the Brazilian national team, but he was not released by the club and instead former Corinthians coach Mano Menezes accepted the job.

“There is nothing like the national team, but I just couldn’t leave the club at that time,” Ramalho said. “I’m glad that now I’m being able to celebrate this title. After 26 years, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”

Ramalho was hired by club directors to revamp the team after a frustrating 2009, when Fluminense barely avoided relegation.

It was a disappointing finish for Corinthians, which was celebrating its centenary but was not able to win any tournament this year. Brazil’s second most popular club was never lower than third in the standings and came into the last round in second place.

Goias, also already relegated, opened the scoring at Serra Dourada stadium with a long-range shot in the 20th. The shot took advantage of a mistake by Corinthians goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who had tried to clear the ball through the middle of the field.

Corinthians, seeking its fifth league title and first since 2005, equalized with shot by striker Dentinho from inside the penalty box in the 30th.

Corinthians striker Ronaldo returned to the team after missing the previous match because of a muscle injury.

“We tried as hard as we could but unfortunately it wasn’t enough this time,” the veteran striker said.

Cruzeiro, seeking its second league title, needed to beat Palmeiras and hope both Fluminense and Corinthians lost points. It won with an injury-time goal by substitute striker Wallyson at the Arena do Jacare.

Tenth-place Palmeiras, playing with second-stringers after coach Luiz Felipe Scolari rested his regular starters ahead of next season, scored through a header by Rivaldo in the 54th. Midfielder Henrique equalized for Cruzeiro in the 63rd.

Led by Argentine playmaker Walter Montillo, Cruzeiro overtook Corinthians for second place but needed Guarani to equalize against Fluminense to win the title.

Gremio finished fourth after striker Jonas scored his league-leading 23rd goal in the team’s 3-0 victory over Botafogo in Porto Alegre, a result that possibly gives the club a spot in next year’s Copa Libertadores.

The top three teams earn a spot in Latin America’s most important competition, and Gremio also will qualify if Goias fails to win the Copa Sudamericana. Goias beat Argentina’s Independiente 2-0 in the first leg of the final last Wednesday.

Botafogo, led by former South Africa coach Joel Santana and containing Uruguay striker Sebastian Abreu, would have finished fourth had it beaten Gremio.

Vitoria was the final team to be relegated after a 0-0 home draw with Atletico Goianiense in Salvador. Goias, Guarani and Prudente had already been demoted. Coritiba, Bahia, Figueirense and America Mineiro will be back in the top flight next season.

Defending champion Flamengo, Brazil’s most popular club and coached by Vanderlei Luxemburgo, drew 0-0 at Santos to finish 14th in the 20-team standings. Six-time champion Sao Paulo routed Atletico Mineiro 4-0 in Sao Paulo to end a disappointing ninth.

Barcelona routs Real Madrid 5-0

David Villa scored twice as Barcelona ripped apart Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid in a 5-0 rout Monday to go top of the league thanks to a record fifth straight “clasico” win over its bitter rival.

Xavi Hernandez and Pedro Rodriguez put the defending champion 2-0 ahead inside 18 minutes before Villa scored a second-half brace. Substitute Jeffren Suarez scored in the 90th to seal it in front of nearly 100,000 fans at the Camp Nou stadium.

Barcelona’s speed and one-touch passing game frustrated Madrid throughout as it recorded its biggest national derby victory since a 5-0 win here during the 1993-94 season.

Lionel Messi, who set up two goals and was a constant threat, was the star of the show for the hosts, putting Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the shade in the much-hyped matchup of two of the world’s best players.

In the end, Madrid’s frustrations boiled over and Sergio Ramos was sent off in injury time for a wild tackle on Messi.

Barcelona now leads Madrid by two points with 34 points from 13 games after a seventh straight league win.

“We are proud because the world has seen us play the way we like to play,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. “I would like to take more points from Madrid but it’s not possible. That team, with all that power, are just two points behind but we are satisfied.”

Former Chelsea and FC Porto coach Mourinho suffered his worst ever loss to stay winless in six trips to Barcelona. He had never lost by more than three goals before.

“You have to have character, when you lose by five goals you can’t leave crying, you have to go and work harder,” Mourinho said. “You never want to lose by these numbers.”

The contrast with the Portuguese coach’s last visit to the Camp Nou couldn’t be more striking. In April, his Inter Milan side knocked the Catalan side out of the Champions League in the semifinals on its way to winning the title.

Mourinho now has his work cut out to wrestle the league trophy away from Barcelona, the two-time defending champion, and return silverware to the Spanish capital. Madrid hadn’t lost in 26 games, stretching to its last defeat by Barcelona in April.

“I spoke with my players a few minutes ago and I told them the season had not ended today,” Mourinho said. “Last year I left here with a loss and a couple of months later I left here heading to the final of the Champions, who knows what can happen this year.”

Andres Iniesta picked out Xavi as he streaked between two defenders and the ball flicked off the Spain midfielder’s heel before he reacted quickly to direct it past Iker Casillas for the 10th-minute opener.

Madrid sat back and looked to attack on the break with Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria threatening from the flanks. Barcelona ‘keeper Victor Valdes got a hand up to tip Di Maria’s rising shot over the bar in the 12th.

Pedro capped a mesmerizing 22-pass buildup to make it 2-0 as he pounced on a loose ball after Casillas failed to hang on to Villa’s dangerous ball in from the left.

Pedro nearly had a second in the 27th after bursting free into the area along the right but Casillas was out quickly to cut down the angle and clear.

The match threatened to boil over in the 31st when both benches leapt to their feet after Ronaldo shoved Guardiola when he didn’t hand over the ball for a throw-in. Even the diminutive Iniesta was in Ronaldo’s face. The Portugal forward and Valdes ended up with the yellow cards.

“These things happen during the game,” said Guardiola, who has never lost against Madrid and has now recorded two of the club’s biggest wins against its greatest rival after last year’s 6-2 win at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Ronaldo’s free kick took a slight deflection wide in the 34th and he failed to earn a penalty after clashing with Valdes in the race for the subsequent loose ball.

Madrid got physical in a bid to slow the game and regain its composure. Defender Ricardo Carvalho clashed with Messi in the 45th but it was the Argentine winger who got the yellow card for gamesmanship.

While Messi’s 10-game scoring streak ended, he directed Barcelona’s offense and had no problem finding gaps to create both of Villa’s goals in near identical plays down the left side.

“When they scored the third goal the game was over,” Mourinho said. “I just wanted my team to retain their balance and dignity on the pitch.”

Villa got behind Pepe in the 55th to receive from Messi and slot past Casillas, who was again on his own three minutes later when Villa slotted under him for his eighth of the season. Mourinho watched on stone-faced from Madrid’s bench.

“For a first clasico you couldn’t ask for more,” said Villa, who replaced Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Barcelona’s main striker this season.

A deflated Madrid failed to create any danger after that as Suarez scored after a scramble to cap the rout in injury-time before Ramos was sent off.

“They were better in all aspects,” said Xabi Alonso, the only Madrid player to speak after the game. “What’s clear is there’s a lot of league left to play. Let’s hope this defeat doesn’t affect us, but time will tell.”

Iniesta was surprised by the lack of attacking options the Blancos had, and was pleased that his side leapfrogged the Blancos to the summit of the Liga table.

"We have played a great game," the 26-year-old told AS after the match. "We had to play with great intensity and the team has put on a great performance.

"It was a very big margin, as they almost had no attacking options. We know that this is not winning the league, but just a small step.

"We have been spectacular and put on a show for both the players and public. I think we are just winners and we will now go on with the rest of the season," he concluded.

Jose Mourinho had a nightmare first Clasico as champions Barcelona crushed his Real Madrid side 5-0 at Camp Nou on Monday to go two points clear of their bitter rivals at the top of the Spanish first division.

Spanish World Cup winners Xavi and Pedro Rodriguez put Barcelona into a two-goal lead after just 17 minutes and David Villa marked his first Clasico with a brace inside two minutes (54 min, 56) before Jeffren added a late fifth as Mourinho stomached an unforgettable first defeat in charge of Real.

"It was an important win by a big margin and it puts us top two points above Real in the table which is what we wanted," said Villa. "However, it is only November and there are lots of games left and we have to keep on winning."

For Barcelona it was a fifth successive Clasico win over their arch rivals as coach Pep Guardiola maintained his 100 percent record in the fixture and exacted revenge over Mourinho, whose Inter Milan side defeated Barcelona in last season's Champions League semi-finals.

Real went into the game unbeaten and hoping for a first win at Camp Nou since December 2007.

However, Barcelona gave old boy Mourinho, who used to work for the Catalan club as a translator under Bobby Robson, a night to forget with an emphatic win, one of the heaviest defeats in his glittering career, that evoked memories of the 6-2 drubbing of Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in May 2009.

"One team played to their potential and one didn't," said Mourinho. "It was a defeat that we fully deserved but I don't think you can say it reflected the difference between the two sides.

"The championship isn't over today. We are two points behind the leaders but there are lots of games left to play. We have to show character, train hard and get back to winning. I wish we were playing tomorrow."

It was a huge psychological win for Barca in the title race and the omens are good with the winner of the first Clasico going on to be crowned champions in the last six seasons.

Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain was a last-minute withdrawal for Real due to injury so French international Karim Benzema was handed a chance to shine on the biggest stage.

Guardiola said Real were the best counter-attacking team in the world but said Barcelona would attack and they were good to their word.

In the fifth minute Messi surprised everyone by curling a beautiful left-footed chip onto the post with Iker Casillas well beaten.

It was a warning that Real didn't heed and on nine minutes the hosts took the lead through Xavi.

Andres Iniesta fed a pass into the penalty area with Marcelo failing to intercept the pass and Xavi took advantage of a fortunate piece of control to prod calmly past Casillas to the delight of the home fans.

Real had the best defence in the league beforehand and this was only the seventh goal they had conceded under Mourinho.

The visitors responded with Angel di Maria forcing Victor Valdes to tip over a fierce shot but Barcelona were looking dangerous and struck again on 17 minutes through Pedro.

Villa went past Sergio Ramos by the touchline and Casillas could only fingertip his cross into the path of the inrushing Pedro who fired home.

Cristiano Ronaldo, top-scorer in the league with 14 goals, then took centre stage with his pass almost reaching Benzema only for Eric Abidal to avert the danger.

On the half hour mark Ronaldo started a melee when he pushed Barca coach Guardiola for holding the ball, earning him a yellow card, and then whistled a fine free-kick past the post of Victor Valdes.

Real brought off the ineffective Mesut Ozil at half-time with Lass Diarra replacing him but it was more of the same as Barcelona dominated.

Villa went close with his goal-bound shot blocked but on 54 minutes Messi fed the Spanish World Cup winner, who took the pass brilliantly in his stride before firing past Casillas.

Real complained that Villa was offside but the goal stood and two minutes later the 40-million-euro signing from Valencia struck again with his eighth league goal of the season.

A defence-splitting pass from Messi released Villa, who beat Casillas again and left Real 4-0 down before the hour mark.

Substitute Jeffren Suarez netted a fifth late on and Sergio Ramos was sent off in the final minute for a terrible foul on Messi and then shoving Carles Puyol as tempers boiled over.

And the U.S. thought it was rough getting to the Women’s World Cup.

The two-time world champions wound up with what could be the toughest group at next summer’s tournament, drawing North Korea, Colombia and Sweden in Group C on Monday.

Sweden is No. 4 in the latest world rankings while North Korea is sixth. Germany is the only other seeded team to draw two top-10 opponents in the group stage, with No. 8 France and No. 9 Canada joining Nigeria in Group A.

“It’s good because it’s a very strong group. That’s the best thing that could happen to us,” U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said from the draw in Frankfurt, Germany. “That will be inspiring for us, the fact we’re playing high-ranked teams like Sweden and North Korea and a new team Colombia, which will be so enthusiastic going into the World Cup.”

Japan and Brazil are the other two seeded teams. The World Cup will be played June 26 to July 17 at nine sites in Germany.

The Americans are the world’s top-ranked team and defending Olympic champion, and have lost only two games since the 2007 World Cup. Yet they were the last team to qualify for the 16-nation tournament, forced into a home-and-home playoff against Italy after being stunned by Mexico in the semifinals of regional qualifying.

The Americans beat the Italians 1-0 on Saturday to win the playoff on 2-0 aggregate.

“That was something really good for us,” defender Ali Krieger said. “We’ve come together more as a team and on the field, we’re going to fight more as a team. We know what we want.”

The U.S. begins play June 28 against North Korea in Dresden, the fourth straight time the nations will meet in the group stage. The Americans beat the North Koreans 3-0 in 1999 and 2003, but tied 2-2 in 2007.

“At the time, we had a very experienced team, now we have a very young, inexperienced team and I am a little bit worried,” North Korea coach Kim Kwang-min said through an interpreter.

The North Koreans have been impressive at the youth level, winning the Under-20 World Cup in 2006 and the Under-17 World Cup in 2008. North Korea was the runner-up to the Americans at the 2008 U-20 World Cup, with one of the U.S. goals coming from Alex Morgan, who scored in the first playoff game against Italy.

“The new team is very young and inexperienced, but very ambitious,” Kim said. “We don’t have high aims, but to do as well as we can.”

The U.S. will face World Cup newcomer Colombia on July 2 in Sinsheim and finish group play four days later in Wolfsburg against Sundhage’s native Sweden. Sundhage scored 71 goals in 146 appearances for Sweden from 1974-96, including four as Sweden won the bronze medal at the inaugural World Cup in 1991.

“It’s just a little bit weird before and after,” Sundhage said. “But during the game, it’s like coaching against any team, actually.”

The Americans blamed much of their recent struggles on fatigue, with qualifying coming on the heels of the Women’s Professional Soccer season. That shouldn’t be as much of a factor next year, with the team getting December off before gathering in January in Los Angeles ahead of the Four Nations Tournament.

The Americans also should get a boost with the return of goalkeeper Hope Solo, who missed World Cup qualifying to have shoulder surgery.

“I think that when we get a little bit of rest, everybody can get their wits about them and come back to the drawing board and perform like we know we’re capable of,” forward Abby Wambach said Saturday. “Because we’re honest with ourselves. We know that this isn’t the way we normally play. … But at the end of the day, I know that this team right now has a chance of winning the World Cup.”

Germany begins the tournament June 26 in Berlin against Canada, the winner of North and Central America and the Caribbean qualifying. The two-time defending champion also plays France and Nigeria, which it recently beat 8-0 in an exhibition.

“They will be a different team next year,” Germany coach Silvia Neid said of the Nigerians.

Japan will face New Zealand, Mexico and England in Group B, while 2007 runner-up Brazil drew Australia, former champion Norway and Equatorial Guinea in Group D.

The Americans won’t see Germany until at least the semifinals. The Germans beat the U.S. 3-0 in the 2003 semis but the Americans are 5-0-2 against the world’s No. 2 team since, including a 3-2 victory in the Algarve Cup final earlier this year.

“If you look at the bumpy road, I’ll deal with anything. Regardless of what kind of teams we get, I’ll look at it in a positive way,” Sundhage said. “In (qualifying), we took things a little bit too for granted and it was good for us because now we can regroup and I think it will be a more cohesive team.”

Gonzalo Higuain has failed a last-minute fitness test and will not start for Real Madrid against Barcelona in the El Clasico encounter, according to Marca.

The Argentine has been struggling for fitness all week, with coach Jose Mourinho opting to rest him for the Champions League match with Ajax in order to give him every chance of making a recovery.

It was thought that the striker would be able to take his place in the starting line-up, and indeed Mourinho hinted at his side in a press conference on Sunday night, with Higuain included as the lone striker.

The 22-year-old was subjected to several medical examinations on Monday morning, and it has reportedly been confirmed that Higuain is not fit enough to start, and may be forced to settle for a place on the bench.

Mourinho may be forced into a tactical rethink, with Lassana Diarra being drafted into midfield being one option available. However, more likely is a straight swap for Karim Benzema, who has been rejuvenated in recent matches.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is in defiant mood ahead of Monday night's clash with Barcelona at Camp Nou in the Spanish Primera Division and says that he will not be forced to adapt the way his team has been playing so far this season.

Madrid and Barca confront each other in the first Clasico of the season tomorrow with los Blancos a point ahead of the Catalans at the top of the table. It promises to be an exiting game of football and Mourinho, who has already pledged to do his best to see that it lives up to the pre-match hype, has now revealed that he will not adapt his team's playing style.

"The Clasico is obviously an important match because we will play against a direct opponent; the points we may end up taking will be points dropped by them," Mourinho is quoted as saying by Madrid's official website.

"Nevertheless, whatever happens tomorrow, 25 league games will still remain. I expect a beautiful game in which players help the referee and true football takes centre stage.

"We won't change our working methods for Barcelona or any other team. We have the same respect for all our opponents. Barcelona may be better than other teams in La Liga, but we have the same respect for everyone and we always have to look for their weakest points."

Mourinho also played down talks that Madrid are favourites for the game and observed, "The Clasico isn't won by the team that's in better form or having a better run. The motivation for these games is different. It's hard for me to say I'm the favourite to win because I'm in a better position.

"I don't see it that way. My experience in derbies and classic games tells me otherwise. I don't have the same adrenaline rush I get in a Champions League knockout stage, in which failing to win implies you'll watch the next game at home on TV."

Mourinho's side have yet to lose in any competition this season but Mourinho says that they are prepared for defeat to their archrivals without imploding.

"My team is psychologically strong enough to lose tomorrow and continue having faith in itself and winning games without getting overexcited," explained the former Inter tactician. "A championship demands of you to play at the highest level for ten months.

"I don't want our self esteem to change if we win or lose tomorrow. I will remain calm after the match whatever happens."

The 47-year-old is also confident of weathering the hostile reception Camp Nou would give him and stated, "I would like to return to Barcelona as Real Madrid's coach because it would mean I'll be here for many years thanks to earning good results. I don't see any coaches worrying about how they may be received.

"My concentration won't falter if the stands are against me. I don't care. I just want to play football and enjoy it. That's all."

The two-time Champions League winner also appeared nonchalent about refereeing decisions tomorrow and stated, "I'm not worried about the referee. I think referee Iturralde is a referee supporter, not a Barcelona supporter.

"It will be easier for him to do his job well if the players help him. It will be harder if they don't. Our intention is to help the referee."

Barcelona, Madrid downplay importance of ‘clasico’

Barcelona and Real Madrid agreed on one thing heading into Monday’s “clasico”: The fate of the Spanish league title wouldn’t be decided by the result of the highly anticipated match at Camp Nou.

“Whoever wins will only be the champion of the league this week, while the one that loses won’t be,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said Sunday. “We’ve spent too much time talking about it. I can’t wait for it to start.”

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho concurred.

“Nobody goes home crying if they lose,” he said. “No one goes home with the championship lost. It’s not a game that will be decisive.”

Mourinho, however, increased the pressure on referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez by stating his unhappiness with his appointment. Gonzalez has officiated in two games between the teams, with Barcelona winning both times, in 1999 and 2005.

“The statistics are there—Barcelona is happy with Iturralde Gonzalez and Real Madrid is less happy,” the Portuguese coach said.

Aside from being a matchup between two of the world’s biggest clubs and superstars—Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo—the match will present the best measurement of how far Madrid has come under Mourinho, who used to work at Barcelona as a translator before becoming an assistant coach when Guardiola played for the club.

“He’s the best,” Guardiola said. “He convinces his players of his ways because he is the best or one of the best.”

Both teams are at full strength with Madrid trio Gonzalo Higuain, Sami Khedira and Ricardo Carvalho having been cleared to play after missing the team’s 4-0 win over Ajax on Tuesday due to injury.

Madrid has won seven straight games to lead the standings by one point over Barcelona, which has won six straight.

Madrid hasn’t beaten its bitter rival since May 2008, losing a record four straight. But Guardiola said the teams now are evenly matched.

“I think Barcelona has a very good team, but I also think Madrid does, too,” he said. “To think Barcelona has a better team is not fair. They’ve always had very quick players who can get to goal with few touches. Madrid has always been a team based on the counterattack and they continue being that.”

Mourinho said he won’t alter his team’s style and will instead look to identify some of Barcelona’s weaknesses and exploit them, adding that the 90,000-plus fans and millions of worldwide viewers can expect a world-class match if everyone does their job.

“I’m worried about my team, like always. We won’t abandon our own gameplan for Barca,” Mourinho said. “We need to find their weakest point and take positives from that.”

“If the players only worry about playing football, there’s enough quality there to have a game for all of the world (to love), and we have the responsibility to provide the world with a match the world can love. These are two teams that could be the best—if not the best, then very close (to it).”

Whereas Barcelona has won eight trophies in two seasons under Guardiola, Mourinho has taken over a club without a title in more than two years.

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol insists that Monday night’s El Clasico encounter with Real Madrid is very even, but that the team will do everything possible in order to secure victory.
